What is a GIF?

GIF is a short form of Graphics exchange format. It is a lossless format for image files that supports both moving and static images. It was invented in 1987 by Steve Wilhite, an American software publisher.

It’s now quite common to see people using gifs on popular social media websites.

Previously, Facebook users had to enter the URL of a GIF hosted elsewhere. Now, uploading GIFs to your Facebook post has become quite easy with the GIF button.

To upload a GIF to your Facebook post, follow the steps below.

Log into your Facebook account. Once you are in your account, click on the area where it is written – What’s on your mind? This is where you’ll post your status and photo.

When you click inside the area as shown in the image above, you get different options to select – Photo / Video, Friends Tag, Recording, Feeling / Activity and GIF.

When you click on the plus button, the three dots, you get options to choose from like collect money, live video and watch the party.

As shown in the picture below, you need to select GIF among the options.

Facebook will automatically display GIF files that you can choose to post. You also have the option to search for any particular GIF that you are looking for.

Enter the search term in the search box based on your mood or status, then press Enter.

Let’s say you are happy with a recent achievement and want to share your excitement with your friends.

Just type HAPPY in the search bar. It will present you with GIFs related to happy moments.

  • Select the GIF you want to add to your Facebook post.
  • Once the GIF is added to your post, add some text to it.
  • After completing the above steps, hit the Publish button. That’s all.
  • Your post with GIF will be posted as your status on Facebook for your friends to view, like, share and comment on.

There is three options provided by Giphy that you can use to add GIFs to Facebook.

  1. Upload a GIF natively in the Facebook status area.
  2. Upload a GIF directly to Facebook directly from giphy.com
  3. Upload a GIF directly to Facebook from the GIPHY mobile application.

Download the GIF natively in the Facebook status box

  1. Go to giphy.com or launch your GIPHY mobile app. Select the GIF you want to post to Facebook.
  2. You will be taken to the GIF details page.
  3. On the desktop, save the GIF as right click and hit save. On mobile, you can save the GIF to your camera roll.
  4. Open your Facebook profile and go to the status area.
  5. In the status area, click Photo / video and select your saved GIF.
  6. Once your GIF has downloaded, click Share.

  1. On giphy.com, click on the selected GIF you want to post to Facebook.
  2. Once you click on the GIF, you will be taken to the GIF details page.
  3. Click the Facebook download button located on the GIF details page. The Facebook download button is located on the right side of the GIF under Share it! in the GIF detail page (see image below).

Upload a GIF directly to Facebook directly from the GIPHY application

  1. Open the GIPHY mobile application and press the Screen_Shot_2018-12-07_at_3.07.20_PM.png located under any GIF.
  2. This will open a selection of social sharing buttons – tap the Facebook button.
  3. Once you press the Facebook button, it will automatically add the GIF to the Facebook status area.
  4. Type your text. Once you are done with your message, click Share.
